A Critical Moment for SNAP
With the ongoing federal government shutdown, our nation is facing an unprecedented situation. For the first time in its 60-year history, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) lapsed on Saturday, November 1. In response, we’re seeing incredible action from community organizations — including the Seattle Community Fridge program — as well as local small businesses offering free meals and hosting food drives.
These efforts show the best of our community spirit. If you’re able, please consider donating time or money to food programs or mutual aid efforts near you. Every contribution helps keep our neighbors fed and supported.

State and Local Action
While lawmakers in the other Washington continue working toward federal solutions, local and state leaders are stepping up:
• Governor Bob Ferguson announced that Washington State will direct $2.2 million per week to support statewide food banks.
• This initiative, combined with emergency funding released by the mayor’s proclamation — later confirmed by the Seattle City Council — will provide much-needed short-term relief for families across Seattle and King County.
