The Northaven Classics Book Club will meet on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, from 7:00 to 8:15 p.m. in the Northaven Library. This month’s discussion will focus on The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers.
All are welcome to attend, even if you have not read the book. The conversations are always thoughtful, lively, and interesting, and everyone is invited to listen, share, and enjoy.
Carson McCullers was just 23 years old when she published The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, her first novel, and quickly became a literary sensation. Set in a small Southern mill town in the 1930s, the novel explores poverty, loneliness, moral isolation, injustice, and love that is given but not always returned.
Through a memorable cast of characters, including Mick, an awkward and unforgettable tomboy coming of age, McCullers offers a moving portrait of people searching for understanding, connection, and a better life. The novel also reflects the realities of the pre-World War II South, including the exploitation of mill workers and African Americans, while injustice remains close at hand and fascism rises in Europe.
The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter is a thoughtful, powerful, and unforgettable classic, filled with tenderness, emotional truth, and remarkable insight. As Northaven resident and Classics Book Club host Jeffrey K. shares, “Dear reader, you will not be bored reading this very classic novel!”
