Join Northaven’s Classics Book Club on September 29 for a lively discussion of Shakespeare’s famous Scottish tragedy.

Three mysterious witches, an ambitious general, and a ruthless pursuit of power—there’s plenty to talk about in Macbeth. Northaven’s Classics Book Club invites you to join the conversation on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, from 7 to 8:15 p.m. in the Northaven Library.

Everyone is welcome, even if you haven’t read the play. Our discussions are always fun and interesting, and this month’s selection promises no shortage of conversation!

A Classic with Plenty of Drama

William Shakespeare’s Macbeth follows a Scottish general whose encounter with three witches sets a dangerous ambition in motion. Their prediction of his rise to power, combined with encouragement from Lady Macbeth, leads him down a path of murder, guilt, and paranoia. With supernatural encounters, political upheaval, and more than a little bloodshed, this is hardly a quiet evening’s reading. Beneath the action are questions that still spark debate more than 400 years later: What happens when ambition overrides conscience? How much is someone willing to sacrifice for power? And can guilt ever truly be silenced?

It’s easy to see why Macbeth remains a favorite of this month’s organizer—and why its themes continue to resonate with readers today.

A Helpful Way to Read Shakespeare

If Shakespeare’s language feels intimidating, the organizer recommends the No Fear Shakespeare edition of Macbeth. It places Shakespeare’s original text alongside a modern English translation on facing pages, making the dialogue easier to follow. A guide to the characters also helps readers keep track of who’s who as the drama unfolds.

Whether you’re revisiting an old favorite, discovering the play for the first time, or simply curious about those three troublesome witches, come spend an evening with fellow readers. Bring your thoughts, your questions, and your love of a good story.
