As we move into winter—and the shorter, darker days it brings—it’s a good time for all of us at Northaven to think about safety. A few simple habits can help us stay aware, confident, and connected.
Stay Aware of Your Surroundings
Watch your footing, especially in low light or wet weather.
Be mindful of vehicles, bicyclists, and the people around you. Winter visibility affects everyone.
Buddy Up When You Can
If you’re heading out in the evening, consider going with a friend. Walking together is both safer and more supportive.
If Something Feels Off at the Front Door
If you ever feel unsure about someone near the entrance, call Security and ask them to meet you there. Save the number on your phone: Northaven Security: 206-724-9057
Current Safety Concerns in Seattle
Two issues are especially important right now:
The “Do You Need a Hug?” Scam
Individuals approach older adults with an offer of a hug, then pick pockets or remove jewelry. Politely refuse and keep your distance if approached.
Transit Being Used as Emergency Shelter
Winter weather has driven some individuals in crisis onto buses and trains. Stay alert and make choices that feel safe. When using transit:
Stay aware of your surroundings
Keep your personal safety alarm handy
Stay close to other riders
Choose a different bus or train car if something feels uncomfortable
Call or text 911 if you see something unsafe
Additional Winter Safety Tips
Use good lighting at night to reduce tripping hazards.
Take your time—wet floors, icy sidewalks, and dark afternoons increase fall risk.
As Benjamin Franklin said,
“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
A little awareness goes a long way. Let’s continue to look out for ourselves and one another.
Stay safe, stay warm, and stay connected.
